CUPE 65 Bylaws approved by National

President Caul and myself are pleased to announce that as of November 6/2019 the bylaws for CUPE 65 are now approved by CUPE National. This has been a long time coming and it is good to finally be caught up and have current bylaws. Now that we are up to date, we will be looking at creating a bylaw committee to review the bylaws annually, beginning next fall, and submit changes as required to national.

I will be looking into getting bylaws printed into booklets similar to how they have been in the past, these will be available at the CUPE 65 office and during general membership meetings monthly. I will post again when these are available. Until then I will be uploading the newly approved bylaws to the website so that anyone in 65 can have immediate access to them.

New Warden Elected for 65

Congratulations to Tara Svoboda, she was elected at the October general membership meeting and will be CUPE 65’s new Warden, completing the term left vacant by Marilyn. This term will end at the same time as the remainder of the Executive, Fall 2020.

By-Election for the Executive Board position of Warden

Unfortunately due to the closure of the Fort Frances Town Daycare, and the termination of our fellow CUPE members, the position on the Executive board of Warden, previously held by Marilyn Rivalin has fallen vacant. Due there being nearly 1 year left in the term of office, a special by-election has been called for the general membership meeting on October 23 / 2019. Please find an outline of the duties of the warden below, any interested parties must be in attendance, as well as be a member in good standing in order to run in this election.
(Event information can also be found on the link to the meeting on the right of the page)

The Warden Shall:
(a) Guard the inner door at membership meetings and admit no one but members in good standing or Officers and officials of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, except on the order of the President and by consent of the members present.
(b) Assist in maintaining the record of membership attendance at meetings.
(c) Perform such other duties as may be assigned by the Executive Committee from time to time.

Amendments Submitted to National

On September 25/19 at the general membership meeting the amended bylaws were presented to the membership as well as the rational for the changes as outlined in the letter from CUPE National’s office. After the amendments were presented time was given to answer any questions and concerns the membership had. A vote was conducted on the acceptance of the bylaw’s adoption by the local, this vote was unanimous. This evening the bylaws were submitted to the national office in Kenora, and they will be forwarded by them to the National President’s office.

Assuming the bylaws are returned to the local approved by the National President’s office, the Executive has resolved to have booklets made up for the bylaws, as the union has done in the distant past, so that we can ensure all Officers have a copy. We will also be putting the bylaws on this website so that any member may have readily accessible access to the bylaws at any given time.

Special Agenda Item: Local Bylaw Amendments/Vote

At the end of July,  President Caul and myself met and went over the National union’s recommended changes to our amendments to the local’s bylaws which we submitted to them earlier this year. We have updated the bylaws to reflect the changes suggested / requested by the national union. The September General membership meeting will have a special agenda item,  which will be the presentation by the executive board of the amendments to the locals bylaws. There will then be the chance for debate, questions and a vote on the acceptance of these bylaws as amended and for the re submission to the national union.

There will be copies of the amended bylaws available for the members to review during the presentation.

CUPE Local 65 Website goes live

It is my pleasure to welcome all my fellow members of CUPE 65 to our newly created website. It is the Executive board’s hope that this website will help to improve communication, functionality and solidarity for our local.

I would like to take a moment to recognize that this website would not be possible without the utilization of CUPE’s vast resources, and the expert knowledge of Brother Ian Clysdale, without whom, this website would still be just a wish and not reality.

The website has been built to try and provide the members with the basic information that members ask about frequently, or may need on a regular basis. For example:

1. All units collective agreements
2. Commonly requested forms, such as grievance forms, and the steward handbook have links.
3. The names of all union officers within our local, as well as the emails for the Executive board and the Unit chair for each unit.

We will strive going forward to update the website frequently with educational opportunities as well as agenda items for upcoming meetings, and important events for our local, so please stop by often.

The executive has asked myself, Ryan Flamand, your current Vice President, to oversee the website creation and maintenance, I look for forward to hearing from members whom have suggestions for improvements or additions to the website, and would encourage that you attend the local’s monthly meetings and bring these suggestions to the floor.

I take great pride in being able to provide this website to the local.

In Solidarity,

Ryan Flamand
