January 2021 meeting cancelled due to Provincial lockdown.

As all of you are aware the provincial lockdown has come into effect today, and even though it is set to end January 23, ahead of our meeting, there has been talk of it being extended by the government. At this time myself and Vice President Caul have decided to cancel the meeting for this month.

If there are any concerns requiring the executives attention please do not hesitate to contact myself or VP Caul.

On behalf of the Executive,  I encourage all our members to follow the provincial lockdown orders.

Stay healthy and stay safe.

In solidarity,

2020 CUPE Local 65 Election Results

At the October general meeting we opened the floor to nominations for the election of a new Executive for the next two years. The meeting reached quorum for the first time via Zoom, and we proceeded with nominations. Surprisingly there was only one nominee for each of the executive positions. With no challengers to each position, these members were acclaimed. November’s meeting via Zoom also met quorum and we were able to hold the general meeting, at this time President Caul confirmed the new executive committee based on the results of the nominations from October’s meeting, and the lack of need for a election, the results are as follows:

Executive Committee for CUPE Local 65, 2020-2022
President: Ryan Flamand
Vice President: Lori Caul
Secretary Treasurer: Wendy Kellar
Recording Secretary: Curtis Dustin
Warden/Membership officer: Tara Svoboda

The very familiar names above are now the active Executive committee for Local 65 and will serve until Fall 2022.

I look forward to working for the  betterment of our local and all the members in it as President.

Locals 65 and 4807 Come together

As of Monday November 16th 2020, CUPE locals 65 and 4807 will be sharing a office space at 390 McIrvine Road in Fort Frances. The two locals have been discussing the concerns our members have had with health and safety at our old location. Both 65 and 4807 had decided it was time for a change, and realized by pooling resources and coming together we could foster solidarity between two locals, as well as enhance the ability of both executives to ensure the health and safety of our members at a new location.

Mitch Carlson of local 4807 has been instrumental in securing a new location for the joint office and it has been a pleasure working with him to see this through. As of Monday our new office will be up and running, and we look forward to using it to better support our membership.

Obviously due to the pandemic in person meetings will still be on hold, but I look forward to the  day we are able to all come together at our new office and return to the regular in person meetings we once had, until then stay safe and stay healthy local 65.

Restore OUR Rights

Register to join CUPE Ontario in this important Zoom launch that kicks off the campaign to fight back against Bill 195’s attack on front-line workers.

With the legislation, emergency orders that were supposed to be temporary and which permitted employers to ignore sections of our collective agreements, are now extended indefinitely.

This is an extraordinary, undemocratic, and unprecedented abuse of power. Front-line workers – who helped keep us safe and delivered the critical services in a pandemic – deserve better than an attack on their legal rights.

They deserve to have their rights restored today – and we’re launching province-wide actions to make sure they are.

Register to  join us for a discussion and planning session with CUPE Ontario leaders in sectors impacted by Bill 195.

“SIGN THE PETITION” – All Front Line Workers Deserve Pandemic Pay

Thousands of workers across Ontario are putting themselves at risk to deliver the vital public services our communities depend on during the Covid-19 pandemic.

But many were excluded from recent pandemic pay increases announced by the Ford Conservatives.

SEND a message to Premiere Doug Ford and Ministers Christine Elliot and Peter Bethlenfalvy to demand pandemic pay recognition for all front line workers.

Fort Frances Labor Council Presentation

CUPE 65 along with the other unions in the area have been approached by the newly reformed Labor Council about joining. This Council much like the Canadian Labor Council looks to pull together multiple unions to help support each other and promote solidarity. This is a organization that existed in the past and is looking to reform, in these times of uncertainty with the constant attack on multiple sectors by the Fort government.

On March 25/2020 @ 7:30pm , during our next general membership meeting, Joanne Formanek Gustafson and Sydnet Chalifoux, interim leaders of the Labor Council, will be presenting to the members of CUPE 65 their plan moving forward, and vision for the Council. They are looking  for CUPE 65 to commit to joining, and paying dues when the labor council is officially formed.  After the presentation their will be time for questions and answers, and then a motion to vote on joining will be brought forward, if passed there will be a vote on the matter at the April general meeting.

The executive encourages all members that are able to attend, do so. It is strongly recommended that all Unit chairs attend.
